Are you an experienced coppice worker looking to bring a woodland back into rotation? Longleat Forestry, based on the Wiltshire/Somerset border, are exploring the options of bringing some of our old coppice woodlands back into rotation. Most of our broadleaf sub-compartments have a significant hazel understory that was previously or sporadically coppiced, but have since fallen into a state of non-management.

We hope to rectify this by offering an individual or team of coppice workers a sub-compartment to manage by bringing it back into rotation. We are willing to listen to any suggestions or ideas of how best to manage this process from experienced and capable individuals passionate about keeping this traditional craft alive.

If you’d like to discuss this in more detail or would like to arrange a site visit please drop me an email or give me a call. I’m willing to explore all reasonable ideas of how to make this work for all parties.

Woodsman / Forest Worker Wanted We are looking for a woodsman to start immediately for the Winter 2020/2021 Season. Pay will be commensurate with experience. Duties will include working in the yard and in the wood: collecting and making bundles of hazel for customer orders, processing logs, forwarding timber from the wood. As well as general labouring and working with volunteers. Training will be given to those not familiar with certain techniques to the required standard for the task. A good knowledge of mechanics and a drivers licence would be an advantage. This is outdoor, high stamina work and the right candidate will need agility and good core strength. The role is to support the existing team leader.

The past few months has seen the roundhouse develop into what is now a sturdy frame, made entirely from materials found in the local area. A 1 acre area has been coppiced to produce the hazel for the wattled walls, and oak and ash has been used in the main frame. Clay and manure is ready for use on the walls.
Many local people have helped with work including BTCV volunteers, children and local people.
During the coming weeks school children, the refugee and youth services will be part of our summer programme.

Hardwood Wanted for Greenwood Craft Straight stem lengths of hardwood always wanted for greenwood craft. Why spend time processing and seasoning it when I am happy to take it when it's still green and in lengths. Am able to collect transit sized logs only although have ticket and saw and happy to saw to length on site for nice, clean, straight stems. Beech, birch, ash, cherry, oak, sycamore, maple, alder, willow, fruit woods etc. - I can find a use for most things.
