Using wood for heating provides a potential economic incentive to manage woodlands and thus provide sustainable land management for this important habitat. With rising gas and oil prices wood is now the cheapest heating fuel in the UK (www.naturallight.org.uk).
A modern wood fuelled boiler is efficient and clean burning. The current price of fuel-grade wood chip is about 2.4p per kilowatt hour, whilst oil is about 3.7p and gas is about 3.6p. Add to this the fact that wood is a carbon neutral fuel and wood heating becomes a very attractive option. www.bioenergy.org
